Mode Sathorn Hotel, Bangkok

Planning to visit Bangkok again, I wanted to stay in a hotel with a prime location and good prices.

Being able to use public transport was my priority this time. During my first time in the city in February 2014, I got stuck in traffic several times, which was very stressful – exactly what you don’t want when on vacation.

Moving around Bangkok using public transport is much better than taking taxi’s and tuk-tuks. The options are: the Sky Train (BTS), that connects many parts of the city and is efficient and easy to use; the metro (MRT), which is connected to the BTS; or boats, very cheap and provide access to some of the most famous attractions.

Among the myriad of hotels in Bangkok, I chose the Mode Sathorn Hotel, because it has an unbeatable location, in front of a BTS station, and one station away from the river.

Mode Sathorn Hotel

Mode Sathorn Hotel is a modern four-star hotel, that offers fashionably designed rooms for business and leisure travelers, and features impressive facilities, such as a pool on the 11th floor, a rooftop bar with extraordinary views, a spa, sauna and even a gym. The hotel also provides free Wi-Fi for all guests.

The Pemier Location

The hotel is located in Silom-Sathorn district, which for me is one of the best areas to stay in Bangkok, because it is close to many tourist attractions, good restaurants, shopping malls, and is connected to BTS and MRT.

The Mode Sathorn Hotel is in the city center, just 1min away from Surasak BTS Station, one stop away from Saphan Taksin riverside station, two stops away from the MRT, and it’s also within walking distance of Lumpini Park, Silom Night Market and M.R. Kukrit’s House.

I like this area a lot, and during my stay at the hotel I was constantly going to Si Lom 20 Street to grab something to eat.
Suvanarbhumi International Airport is approximately 35Km (21.7 mi) away, and Don Muang Airport 22Km (13.7 mi).

The fashionable rooms

The 38-storey building has 201 classy rooms and suites that are divided in six categories: Business Studio, Deluxe Room, Executive Room, One Bedroom Suite, Two Bedroom suites and Presidential Suite.

They are decorated in different styles, from western inspired, to eastern inspired, metropolitan chic and urban stylish.
I stayed in a Deluxe Room in a western style and is equipped with a king size bed, minibar and fridge, TV, telephone, and a fully equipped luxury bathroom with an awesome bathtub, powerful shower, toiletries and closet.

The room is a really good size for accommodating one or two people and has large windows to admire Bangkok’s skyline and let in plenty of sunlight, which I love.

The bed is a little bit soft, but comfortable, the AC worked properly but the contemporary lighting system can be improved. I’ve already talked to the manager about the lighting, and asked them to include some information in the booklet, as there was none and I was confused about how to use it.

My bedroom was clean and well laid out, the towels were changed and toiletries reset daily. There were also complimentary mineral water, tea and coffee.

But my favorite part of my room was the stunning bathroom with a bathtub with marble finish and a big window.

The Magnificent Infinity Pool

Located on the 11th floor of the building, the infinity-edge pool provides amazing vistas of Bangkok, and a very relaxing and pleasant atmosphere.

This was my favorite part of the hotel, not only because of the view, but also to rest and relax on the lounge-chairs under the threes after sightseeing.

There is a bar by the pool serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, snacks, and light meals; and also a locker room to leave your belongs in case you need it.

During your stay at Mode Sathorn hotel you should not miss the pool and snap some pictures for your Instagram account.

The Rooftop

Located on the 38th floor, the rooftop bar provides a striking view of Bangkok’s skyline and the Chaopraya River, and it’s a great option from where to watch the sunset and dine.

In contrast to the particular rules about dress code, bad service and exorbitant drink prices at other rooftops in the city, the Mode Sathorn’s rooftop has a very relaxed atmosphere and is ideal for dining and sipping a drink, whether you’re a solo traveller, a couple or a group of friends.

Don’t forget that the roof is conveniently located few floors above your room, so stop by and enjoy the view.

The Restaurants

There are three different restaurants at Mode Sathorn Hotel featuring local and international cuisine: the Roof @38, the Sathorn and BLD.

BLD is a bistro-style restaurant on the ground and mezzanine floors, is open from 06:30AM to 10PM and serves European and Asian food, and soft drinks.

The Sathorn on the 10th floor is where the buffet breakfast is served, and is open daily from 6:00 to 10:30AM.

The Roof @38th Bar is your fine dining option in the hotel, serving Mexican, Moroccan, French and Asian specialities. It’s open from 5:00PM until 1:00AM.

I ate at least once in each of the restaurants, and my favorite is the Roof @38TH. The breakfast has a good buffet and omelet and hot meals stations, the Malaysian dish that I had at the BLD restaurant was very tasty, but the dishes at the Roof @ 38th Bar were fantastic.

The service is attentive and friendly and prices are reasonable in all three restaurants.

The Borisud Pure Spa and Borisud Massage

Mode Sathorn Hotel offers its guests a range of spa services such as infrared sauna, Jacuzzi, steam bath, chill shower, body scrubs and wraps, and facial treatments. The hotel also provides traditional Thai massages in a different part of the hotel.

Both settings provide a refined and cozy atmosphere, that allow its customers to relax body and mind.

I love Thai massage, so obviously I visited the Borisud Massage during my stay. If you want to get yours, the best thing it’s to book it while you’re checking-in because there is a really good promotion.

Other Facilities and Services

Other facilities and services that Mode Sathorn Hotel provide are: 24h reception, airport transfer, indoor parking, gym, sauna, meeting rooms, concierge and bell room service, currency exchange, disabled facilities, doctor on call, and valet and laundry services.

My Review of Mode Sathorn Hotel

During my four-day stay, the service delivered by the staff was efficient, attentive and professional.

Most of them speak English, however sometimes I had a hard time to understand them because of their accent. But using a little dose of patience meant everything was soon fine.

From the bell guys, to the concierge, massage receptionists and waiters, they all greeted me with “wai” (a slight bow with the palms pressed together), and even gave me a cup of tea before and after the massage, and a glass of water while I was just working in the BLT restaurant.

My stay at the Mode Sathorn Hotel was delightful and I was very happy to take advantage of public transport to move around Bangkok.

My room was big, with a comfortable bed, great bathroom, and the service provided exceeded my expectations.

So, if you’re looking for accommodation in Bangkok with an excellent location and good prices, Mode Sathorn Hotel is one of the best options.

The average price for the rooms is around US$ 100, however, you can find some for as low as US$ 70 or even US$ 50 as I did.
US$ 100 for a four-star hotel with a pool with awesome views and a rooftop bar sounds really good, doesn’t it?
